ESSMANN geometric smoke extraction for staircases

Bright and pleasant staircases – a matter of course in modern architecture. ESSMANN skylight domes help to achieve this. Combined with an appropriate staircase SHE system, they comply with all smoke extraction requirements, rules and regulations. The relevant regional building codes stipulate that a smoke extraction system must be installed at the highest point of a staircase. It serves to keep escape routes free of smoke and assists the fire service in tackling fires quickly. All you have to do is press the button on the release: The SHE skylight dome is triggered to open independently of the power supply – by means of a lifting cylinder powered either by 24 V emergency power, a servomotor opener or a pressurised CO2 line. The servomotor-powered SHE version comes complete with daily aeration and ventilation. By contrast, a pneumatic unit is all that is needed if you are only planning how to deal with emergency situations. The system must, however, be closed manually and returned to its secure state each time the smoke extraction system has been opened. The ESSMANN SHE set for staircases is available for the following applications:

  • Staircases with smoke extraction through the flat roof
  • Staircases with smoke extraction through side windows in the wall
  • Staircases with smoke extraction through roof windows

Special SHE fittings are available for side windows and roof windows in steep roof structures.

ESSMANN geometric smoke extraction for skylight domes
Geometric smoke extraction systems for staircases are required by the relevant regional building codes. These stipulate that a smoke extraction system MUST be installed at the highest point of a staircase connecting more than two floors. ESSMANN offers skylight domes in the form of an SHE staircase system that complies with this requirement for a geometric smoke extraction area. The skylight domes can be fitted with various control systems, thus enabling them to meet regional building code specifications.

The skylight domes can also be fitted with servomotor drives with emergency power for the purposes of ventilating staircases. Appropriate ventilation cross-sections must be made available in accordance with the code. These cross-sections can be achieved thanks to openers with different lifting heights being used in conjunction with different sizes of skylight dome. Electrical, pneumatic or pressurised gas versions are available.

An electrical SHE staircase system, for example, consists not only of the skylight dome and skylight base, but also of a 24 V servomotor opener, a staircase control centre for control purposes, SHE buttons for activation and a ventilation control mechanism, plus automatic detectors and a wind and rain detection system, if required.
