ESSMANN safety and protection systems for arcade rooflights

ESSMANN arcade rooflights can be equipped with additional multi safety systems. These include HDS protection that takes the form of a perforated aluminium sheet and provides hail, fall-through and sun protection,
plus the fall arrest safety console (FAS) that can be directly mounted onto an arcade rooflight profile to prevent people from falling and to act as a restraining system.

The ESSMANN HDS protection system
is the ideal complement to all standard arcade rooflight systems. It consists of an external perforated aluminium sheet covering that is fitted onto the arcade rooflight profile, with a gap between the two.

The acronym HDS is derived from the German names of the three main functions offered by this product:

H = Harte Bedachung (hard roofing),
D = Durchsturzsicherheit (fall-through protection) and
S = Sonnenschutz (sun protection).

The aluminium sheet covering meets hard roofing requirements in accordance with DIN 4102 Part 7, without the need for any additional measures.
The system's fall-through protection has been tested in accordance with DIN 4426-1, GS-Bau-18 and GS-Bau-01 and is ensured not just during installation but until the warranty expires and beyond that, if regular maintenance is performed.

The perforated aluminium sheet of the HDS system provides the arcade rooflight systems underneath it with the best possible protection and prevents the rooms below from heating up. The structure of the sheet, combined with the movement of the sun over the course of the day, creates a constantly changing pattern of light and shade. Furthermore, the gap of around 60 mm between the perforated HDS protection and the surface of the glazing provides good air circulation and prevents heat from accumulating. The dappled effect created by the natural shade that filters through the arcade rooflight systems not only looks fantastic, but also offers excellent protection against the sun:

  • Loss of transparency: Max. 10% - 20%
  • Total energy transmission value: < 27%
  • No accumulation of heat

Other benefits provided by HDS protection:

  • Hail protection
  • Glare protection
  • UV protection
  • Protection against pollution
  • Good absorption of the noise generated by rain and hail
  • Soundproofing
  • Intruder resistance

The ESSMANN HDS protection system can also be retrofitted onto all standard arcade rooflight systems (arched arcade rooflights, saddle rooflights, pyramid structures).

The ESSMANN fall arrest safety console (FAS)
is an anchor point for fastening and securing people to ESSMANN arcade rooflight systems. It serves as a fall arrest and/or restraining system. The fall arrest safety console complies with class A requirements as a fall arrest safety system according to DIN EN 795 and DIN EN 362 EC type examination certificate, and is certified by the German trade association.

The anchor point consists of a stainless steel console and can be attached to ESSMANN arcade rooflights prior to delivery or retrofitted at any time. Please note that this fall arrest safety console may only be used to secure one person at any one time.

The instructions for use must be read and understood before this anchor point is used. Important safety information relating to the FAS:

  • The fall arrest safety system is only to be fixed in the area of the truss on the arcade rooflight system. For this reason the FAS consoles must be attached around the edge of the arcade rooflight system in question, with a clearance between the console and the truss.
  • The fall arrest safety system may only be used to secure one person at any one time.
  • Only fall arrest systems (belts, ropes, fall arrest energy absorbers and hooks) that meet the requirements of DIN EN 363 and the appropriate instructions for use may be used.
  • The fall arrest safety systems must be inspected by an expert or by the manufacturer at least once a year.
  • The fall arrest safety systems may only be repaired by the manufacturer.
